Gatopardo and Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication present Symbiosis, a space for collaboration, professional development, and on-the-ground reporting directed at emerging journalists in the Americas. Together, Gatopardo’s editorial and creative team and Cronkite’s world-class faculty have developed a first-of-its-kind annual program made up of public conversations, specialized workshops and on-site residencies.

A State of Surveillance in Mexico: A Conversation with Andrea Chapela
If you read Andrea Chapela’s Future Tense Fiction story, “The Wait,” you will be thrown head-first into a version of Mexico where a hyper-vigilant surveillance state uses technology to precisely track citizens in real time. Does the government do so to protect people or for more nefarious motives? The ambiguity behind this question divides Chapela’s protagonists, and provides the narrative tension, and a poignant echo of Mexico’s real-life epidemic of disappearances, as a family seeks information about a disappeared son from the government registry.
Join us for a conversation at 7pm CDMX, 8pm ET with Chapela, Emilio Rivaud, senior web editor for Letras Libres, and journalist Galia Garcia Palafox about Chapela’s story, the state of information tracking in Mexico, and the ever-shifting concept of privacy in a surveilled world.
The conversation will be in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into English.

"Luis Miguel: La Serie" da mucho de que hablar sobre la fluidez de identidades y culturas que enlazan a México con Estados Unidos, y el papel que juega cada país en la vida del otro. Piensen en aquellos momentos de la serie en los que se cruzan fronteras: el papel que juegan Aspen, Las Vegas, Nueva York, Miami… por no mencionar a Puerto Rico, donde nace “el sol de México.” Y piensen en el personaje de Erika, protagonizada por la actriz Camila Sodi, que se siente igualmente en casa estando en México como en Estados Unidos.

Y luego, claro, está la música, y el constante debate sobre la tentación del “crossover,” la presión y oportunidad que enfrenta cada estrella del mundo hispanoparlante de producir discos en inglés (y viceversa).
