Global Nutrition Research Repository (GNRR) for Hispanic/Latinx Populations
The Global Nutrition Research Repository (GNRR) project began in 2024 as a collaboration between Arizona State University (ASU) and Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) and evolved over two years with several leadership transitions at Tec. It was a collaborative effort between the Tec team and the ASU team-Sarah Igoe (Project Manager), Maricarmen Vizcaino (Research Assistant Professor), the Decision Theater team, and ASU HON 498 students. The initiative addressed a critical gap: the lack of a unified resource for research on nutrition and obesity affecting Mexican, Mexican American, and Latinx populations. The GNRR was designed to support researchers, public health advocates, and policymakers by consolidating comprehensive research in a single, accessible repository, enabling the identification of gaps and directing efforts toward effective interventions.
Over the course of the 12-month project, Tec’s existing Alimentación para la Salud platform was expanded to integrate nutrition-focused research on Mexican Americans and other Latinx communities in the U.S., using ASU’s COVID-19 Evidence Commons and similar repositories as models. Biweekly meetings allowed the team to adapt objectives and assignments, ensuring the successful completion of strategic goals in data analysis, visualization, curation, and presentation. The resulting operational repository includes a core database of standardized, reviewed, and curated research, presented through a sortable, filterable dashboard. With the GNRR now fully functional, future work will focus on continued curation, manuscript development for a meta-analysis, and additional data analyses. The repository establishes a model for replication across other populations or countries and provides a critical tool for informing research, public health strategies, and policy design addressing obesity and metabolic disorders.
