Dynamic State Estimation of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) Incorporating PMU and SCADA Measurements (Institute of Engineering)

The main objective of this project is to predict LSO in real time, through a Dynamic State Estimation (DSE) approach, DSE will be computed considering PMU and SCADA measurements. In this research project, an aspect of paramount importance is the development of mathematical models of FACTS-controllers for damping LFO and methods code into software to carry out effective analysis of large-scale power systems. To accomplish the objective, it is necessary achieve the following steps:

i) Reconstruct power system signals (nodal voltages, power flows, rotor angles of synchronous machines, voltage phase angles, current magnitudes, and current phase angles) in real time by dynamic state estimation, using measurements made on a power system with dynamically changing conditions. The estimator will take into account the time skew problem and Gaussian random noise in measurements.

ii) Develop a methodology to identify LFO using the developed dynamic state estimation approach.

Once the oscillation modes are identified, a methodology for the enhancement of damping will be proposed based on FACTS devices (e.g., the Static VAR Compensator (SVC) as first device to be included, but other controllers to be investigated as well).
