Collaboration on U.S.-Mexico High Voltage Direct Current Links (Monterrey Campus)

Mexico is currently migrating to the development of new technologies such as high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. This technology will enable, by means of power electronics devices, highly reliable and efficient grid implementations.

As a consequence of the recent Mexican energy reform, the high power interconnection between Mexico and the U.S. has become a pressing issue that will benefit the emerging binational wholesale electricity market.

During the last decade Monterrey Tech has made several contributions in electrical engineering research, in particular in wholesale electricity market studies, power systems and power electronics.

A new ambitious research plan that will address the current Mexican grid demands the combination of the experience of Monterrey Tech in electrical engineering and the top qualified experience of Arizona State University in high-voltage transmission.

This plan consists in a collaborative supervision of more than 30 outstanding Mexican postgraduate students and the eventual development of a binational medium voltage power electronics laboratory.
