Arizona-Mexico Commission invests $200k for semiconductor push
ASU President Michael M. Crow accepted a check on behalf of the university for $200,000 from the Arizona-Mexico Commission. The investment will support the implementation of a memorandum of understanding among ASU, the Government of Sonora, and Mexico’s Embassy in the U.S. The MOU implements work toward research and innovation in the semiconductor industry and robust supply chains in the Arizona-Mexico region.
“This timely and kind investment will help ASU work with Mexico on nearshoring semiconductor companies with a special focus on the state of Sonora,” ASU Executive Director for Mexico Relations Paola Hidalgo said. “This is a particularly strategic opportunity for ASU and Arizona to strengthen the critically important semiconductor sector in the neighboring state.” Sonora is the first state to engage on this initiative, aligned with Mexico’s strategy announced by the president of Mexico, Amb. Esteban Moctezuma Barragán and Gov. Alfonso Durazo through the “Sonora Plan.” With Sonora located only three hours from Phoenix, ASU’s work can leverage the existing socio-economic ties to build capacity across the Arizona-Sonora region, and become a global semiconductor hub, Hidalgo said.
